FILMMAKING WORKSHOP: REPRESENTING PHILADELPHIA HIGH SCHOOLS

Filmmaking Workshop is a class developed and being taught by Amitanashu Das (Director of GSE Films) and Matthew Tarditi. Students will create public service announcements and short videos that represent participating Philadelphia High Schools to local families and the public. The workshop combines hands-on filmmaking, ethnographic methods and service learning. The workshop has been developed in collaboration with the School District of Philadelphia, camra at Penn and GSE Films.

Students will engage with the school district and each school, assessing needs, developing scripts and storyboards, producing, filming and editing videos. Approved final videos will be used on school websites and offered to WHYY (Philadelphia Public Television) for broadcast. Early in the semester, students undergo intensive training in digital filmmaking during which they develop proficiency with filming (cinematography, sound recording. lighting and computer-based film editing). Student teams research video projects and meet with school district personnel, the senior administration of each school, students and teachers. Based on their  research, they develop proposals, film descriptions, scripts and storyboards. Once approved by the schools, teams move from project development to production (filming), followed by post production and completion.
